A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond created from carbon in a controlled laboratory environment. It has the same crystal structure and physical, chemical and optical properties as a mined diamond, including the same fire, brilliance and hardness.

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. Like mined diamonds, they are made from crystallised carbon and measure 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. They are not imitation diamonds or diamond simulants; their origin is what sets them apart.

Lab-grown diamonds are grown in a lab, beginning with a diamond seed and are created using one of two established methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). HPHT recreates the intense heat and pressure under which diamonds form, while CVD allows carbon to build around the seed in layers. Both methods can produce genuine, gem-quality diamonds.

The defining difference is origin. A mined or natural diamond forms beneath the earth, while a lab-grown diamond is created in controlled conditions using advanced technology. Both have the same carbon crystal structure and physical, chemical and optical properties. Specialised equipment and grading information are generally required to reliably identify their origin.

Lab-grown and mined diamonds display the same characteristic fire and brilliance. Their origin may be confirmed through specialised testing and, for premium certified stones, is documented on the diamond's independent laboratory certificate.

A lab-grown diamond is crystallised carbon and is chemically identical to a mined diamond. Moissanite is a different gemstone made from silicon carbide. Both can be created in a laboratory, but they differ in composition, optical appearance and hardness. Moissanite often displays more rainbow-coloured flashes, while a lab-grown diamond has the characteristic light performance of a diamond.

Lab-grown diamonds are exceptionally durable, but their settings and precious metals still benefit from considered care. Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering, exercising, sleeping or using household chemicals, and avoid direct contact with perfume, lotions and beauty products.

Before cleaning, check the care instructions for your piece’s specific metal and setting. Where suitable, soak it briefly in warm water with a small amount of mild soap, then clean gently around the settings with a very soft brush. Rinse over a bowl or plugged sink and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Store each piece separately in a lined jewellery box to minimise scratching and tangling.

Check clasps, claws and settings regularly, and stop wearing the piece if anything feels loose. Secrets by Amaar recommends a professional clean and inspection every six months.
